I agree with Chris about ignoring the IAC code for now. The next time you get the "intermittent hard start" (assuming that means NO start), feel for TWO Fuel relay clicks — one when the Key is turned on, and another when you crank the starter. If you don't get that second click, we can explore the possibilities, such as checking for ECU control (i.e., ground pulses at the injectors as in THIS POST). -- Bruce Young, '93 940-NA (current), 240s (one V8), 140s, 122s, since '63.
