The best way to increase fuel mileage??? 120-130 1965

The OD is good to have but won't always lead to much improved MPG. Assuming you have a 4.10 axle, if you try and use it as a standard 5th gear, it's likely that you'll often be using bigger throttle openings than if you would in top at the same speed. This is why the OD is normally fitted with a 4.56 axle from the factory. Adding an OD to the wagon is a good move because of this.
With the 4.10, best to use the OD above about 45 mph and when conditions are favourable. Anywhere you are using a light throttle, like any degree of downgrade, you can click it in, even at about 30 mph. It'll feel more like a freewheel, but click it out when you come to any upgrade that needs a bit more throttle. You tend to keep pressing down to maintain the speed, but you're effectively overgeared with OD so you have to add even more throttle. You know what it's like when you come to the tp of a long climb, you have to back off before you add another 15-20 mph to the clock. Means that your fuel consumption up the hill has been more like what you get at 80 instead of the 60 you were doing.
OD is best at reducing the revs/noise and giving you more relaxed cruising but unless you use it right it won't give you the MPG benefits you'd like, may even make it worse. This is especially true if you are using it with the 4.10 axle.
As always, the best way of improving the MPG is to change up quickly through to top and then keep the speed down. Not easy if you're enjoying the ride!
