If the stuff is from a big name like Shell/Exxon/Chevron/Castrol, etc. I'd have no worries using it - especially if it's cheap. Just check that the spec is compatible with your older Volvo trans.

All these people are trying to imply they have a better mousetrap by bringing out products for "extended life" or "for high mileage engines" etc., etc. Even Mobil-1 is doing it, trying to trump their already excellent synthetic with a costlier extended life version.

There MAY be slight differences in the chemistry makeup compared to their everyday stuff, but mostly it's the usual triumph of marketing over engineering.
