You buy a car for X dollars, fix something that breaks for Y dollars, the car is not worth X+Y dollars now. It's still worth X only. There are a few exceptions, but not many. Now admittedly, some cars cost more to fix than others, and some cars aren't worth very much. Volvo 240s being one of them... and I think that's what the guy was getting at. High maintenance costs is part of why they are cheap to buy into. Look at recent prices on '80s and '90s Mercedes and Audi.. you can get a hell of a lot of car for the money. maintenance is part of the cost of driving a car, owning a lawnmower, a house.
