Questions about rear brake pads and rotor replacement (965) 900 1997

I have the Volvo rotor and pads and the Volvo Service manual. Still some questions remain:

1) The manual is silent on the guide pins. When 'buttoning up' the job, should I make them clean and dry, or apply some kind of lubricant, or do nothing (which is what I saw the Brake Check guy do last time).

2) I don't see any problem with replacing only one rotor. I saw some damage to the left side when we had to put in new pads at a Brake Check late on a Saturday afternoon when a horrendous grinding began during an out-in-the-country pleasure drive.

3) In removing the rotor. the manual says to loosen the emergency brake. That requires removing the trim panel on the rear side of the console, which I do not want to do. That piece was damaged when I got the car, and it took almost 2 years to locate one with matching color and cherry wood trim, so I don't want to risk it.

Can the rotor be removed without loosening the E-brake? I know on a 240 I would usually not need to loosen the brake at all, or maybe a hammer-whack on the little drum to be sure the shoes moved back.

4) To lift the car I will use a 240 scissor jack and a pair of jack stands. On a 240 I have put the stands close to the jack and under the seam of the rocker panel (which might bend a little). Will the 965 do OK this way? Is there a better location for the stands? (Rear suspension is the multi-link type.)

The job looks pretty straight-forward otherwise. Your answers, and any tips, or heads-ups or 'gotchas' will be most appreciated.

Thanks to all who respond.

Bob
