Photo #1 of mysterious plastic thing in hub/bearing 700 1991

Still stumped by what this thing in the genuine Volvo hub/bearing assembly is, so thought I'd post photos. This one is from the inside/back/strut side of the hub assembly.

Does anyone know what this thing is, and what to do with it? Do I take it out prior to installation, do I leave it on and let it push out as I seat the hub, or what? Did Volvo put it there just to cause agony in do-it-yourselfers?
