vibration and clunking 700 1989

i just put the car up on stands to have a look at the balljoints. they looked a little worn out but i couldn't tell if there was play in them. i did although check for play in the tie rod end and there was lots, i mean lots. i'm probably going to replace both of these parts just to be sure. i got the balljoints for $25 each and i should be able to get the tie rod ends for a similar price.

one question, when i was checking for play the tie rod end showed play but the tie rod also moved very slightly. is that natural?

thanks for your help.
