ANSWER What tools are needed to replace water pump on 240DL?

Can we assume your son has a catch pan for the coolant to drain?

At a bare minimum (and yes, I've done it this way) you will need 10 & 12 mm sockets/ratchet/extension. One of the timing cover bolts is a 12, the rest and the WP bolts are all 10mm. You'll also need a 10mm open end to get the fan off. A folding metric Allen wrench set might be necessary for the heater pipe. Aside from that, you'll need some sort of prybar to lever the pump up to the head, although I've used the factory lug wrench handle to do this, it's also designed to be a prybar.

I suspect 7 tools will be plenty as follows:

10mm open end wrench
10mm socket (deep)
12mm socket (deep or standard)
6" extension
Appropriate drive ratchet
Folding metric Allen wrench set
A screwdriver/nutdriver as appropriate for the lower rad. hose clamp
