Has anyone actually had a heater core failure.......??? 200

Fortunately, heater cores tend to die with a whimper, not a bang. You will begin smelling the sweet scent of antifreeze when the heat is on. The passenger side front carpet will stay a bit damp. The coolant level may drop an inch each month. Depending on how often you use the heater. Turning the heat off stops the leak, provided your heater control valve still works.

I asked the same question re. preemptive replacement a few weeks ago. The consensus seemed to be that a better approach is to keep the heater core healthy through regular coolant changes, and by diluting the coolant only with distilled water.

Good luck.
