'93 940 120K - Is the Alternator Toast? 900

Dear Fellow Brickboarders,

Car died. First, cruise control disengaged. Then speed/tach fluctuated and then died (both went to "0"). Then headlights dimmed. None of the warning lights came on. Stopped car to check on lights. It would not restart, except with a jump charge. I had it towed home.

The battery was installed seven months ago (Wal-Mart Ever-Start). After being on "trickle charge" for several hours, the battery puts out 12.6 volts: the car cranked-up just fine. However, the alternator puts out 11.65 volts. I believe this should be 14.4 volts.

Am I right to conclude, that the alternator has failed?

Thanks for sharing your insights.

Yours faithfully,

spook
