Bulb out light checks.... 200 1988

The lights on that system are low beam, tail lights, and brake lights.

The BFWS (Bulb Failure Warning System) light should come on when the key is in Bulb Test position. That is Position II, engine not running.

The lighting system checked are all wired through the BFWS relay. Thus the relay has a bazillion wires and is not easy to disconnect.

The relay compares the right side current load with that of the left side light. There is a compensating system to include the high level brake light.

By the way, does that high level brake light work?

Since you see the BFWS light with either headlights (tail lights) on or when stepping on the brakes, it would seem that the wires to one side are involved.

Find a place where you can back into a parking space in front of a glass-fronted store. After dark, when the store is closed, back into that space such that you can see the back lights in the reflection, and see which lights work on not. OR - use a helper any time of day.

The wires for the brake lights go through a 9-pin connector found above the left toe of the driver. For the tail lights there are two 6-pin connectors in that same area. The connectors may be stuffed behind the carpet and behind a metal channel cover held in place by one screw. thatwould also be the route for rear speaker wires. (I think there are factory wires that Best Buy in their infinite wisdom knows noithing about.)

Good Luck,

Bob
