Choke Cable Repair 444-544

The casing on the choke cable on the SU closest to the firewall was broken in several places causing difficulty pushing the choke closed. I clipped off the broken sections and put everything back together. Now the casing is too short, creating a sharp bend and the cable hangs up on worse than before! Thank goodness its summer time now and the choke isn't needed.

The local dealership sez cable sheathing is $10 a meter and is only sold in multiples of full meters.

1. Is there a cheaper unofficial Volvo cable suitable for operating the SU chokes reliably?

2. If not, then how much sheathing should I buy?

Thanks,

Joe in WV

If all you need is the outer sheath, the cable sheath sold by bicycle shops is almost exactly the same thing. And inexpensive.

Steve:

Bike shops have the sheathing on rolls that can be cut to legnth. I bought four feet even though the core opening looked kinda small because of the teflon lining inside the steel wrap. Fortunately the choke cable went right in with no problem.

Two hours later (after several tries to get the sheath legnth just right and resynching carb operations, etc.) all is well again with the choke operation.

Thanks for the help.

Parts stores frequently have choke cable kits that include a pretty long
casing and an el cheapo handle on the end of a long piano wire. One of those
kits, properly modified, would probably do your job just fine.

George:

I just needed the sheath. The wire part might have been tricky for dual SU's. The ends of a single continuous wire connects to each of the carbs. The middle of the wire loops around the choke lever. The cable must be about 10 ft long!

Bike shops are usually less crowded and fortunately had exactly what I needed for 1/4 the price at the Volvo dealer.

Thanks much for the reply.
