Alternator question.... on startup it takes a second for the voltage to rise 200 1983

Although it's not really a "problem" but rather something I have noticed on my 83' 242ti. When first started the voltage guage sits right around 12v, where it would be if the car was not running but the key was in accessory position. When i rev the engine up a bit (say to 2500rpm) and let it drop back down to idle the voltage jumps back up into the 14-15 range where it stays the rest of the time the car is running. The battery never drains and the car never fails to start due to a weak battery.

The small wire that attaches to the alternator which "excites" the alternator to letting it know the car is running is attached as far as I know works correctly.

Nothing that causes any real problems, but I figured I'd ask for any ideas.
