TURBO REPLACEMENT MISTAKE

After reading and reading about turbo replacement on here I would like to know, did I make a mistake by replacing my 1986 740 turbo with the same part or should i have stuck a water cooled unit in it with adapter kit of course?

Also a friend told me that using synthetic oil with an older car (137,000) is not such a good idea. more than one person told me that synthetic oil cleans too much out of seals etc. and then everything leaks like crazy?
