Where is the Constant Idle Speed Control Unit located on my '84 240 w/B23? 200

Where is this unit physically located on my car? In the Bentley repair manual on page 390-23 section M1 item # 131. I know where the Idle air control valve (item # 132) is but can't find the control unit. I need to run a wire to it for my '92 A/C conversion. Thanks, Charles

Apples and Oranges 200 1984

Charles,

Those two items (131 and 132 in '84 240 diagram) do apply to 1984 240s, but only those with K-Jet FI. In the U.S. that would be the Turbo 240s thru 1985.

The device that Ken C refers to is an A/C "Idle Speed Increase" solenoid on the throttle body idle speed adjuster.
On early B21s the solenoid bypassed additional air when activated by voltage from the compressor clutch circuit.

Not quite .... 200 1984

re: "...The device that Ken C refers to is an A/C "Idle Speed Increase" solenoid on the throttle body idle speed adjuster...."

Hi Bruce.
Actually, the thing I referred to wasn't on the throttle body (that is, if you meant that literally).
In particularl, it was a small, plastic device that, per the instructions that came with it, was to be installed on the firewall, spliced into a vacuum hose (I can't remember which) on the B21F of an '80. It also needed power from splicing into the wire energizing the A/C compressor's clutch.
It was from a TSB campaign to address complaints of customers that their idle was poor when they put on the A/C.
Best regards,
Ken

That doesn't apply to the '84-on cars -- you don't have one .... 200

Yes, I had the device (I called it an idle speed compensator), that needed a wire from the A/C compressor, on my old '80 B21F.

It actually worked great. Before I installed it (it was an optional part from the parts counter), my idle would bog down whenever the A/C compressor cycled on -- it almost died, in fact. But after installing the thing, everytime the compressor cycled on the idle would be "goosed" a bit, just enough to compensate, and the net effect is that the idle remained somewhat steady (in fact, it increased very slightly, ~50rpm) when the compressor engaged.

That said, by my '83 B23F, this nifty device was no longer needed. The ECU increases idle to compensate.

Bottom line, you don't even have the device in your car.

Hello,

The idle control is operated by the engine control computer LH-Jetronic.

Are you talking about the ECU? If so, then why do they show item # 214 on page 390-22 section K4 in the Bentley and also item #131 on page 390-23 section M1? According to this diagram these are 2 different components. Thanks, Charles

Howdy Charles,

Goatman is correct, the 1984 B23 does not have a separate Constant Idle Speed circuit.

Go to www.k-jet.org and get a copy of TP30427-1, LH-Jetronic Green Book. It shows every component in the system and where to find it.

In that book you will find that pin 16 of the ECU monitors the A/C panel switch. There should be a red wire connected between the two.

Hi,

I don't own a Bentley manual, but I know without a doubt that the idle motor circuit is controlled directly by the ECU,

There are idle control units in K-Jetronic models.

Hi, I got to thinking about what you all were telling me and I looked at the wiring diagram again and found that they do show that the ('92 green) wire connects to terminal #16 on the ('84's)ECU. The ('92 gray/red) wire connects to the ('84 red) wire on the back of the round connector that goes on the back of the instrument cluster. The diagram gives 2 options as to where the red wire goes. One was to the CIS cont. unit (if equipped) and the other is to that connector. So I got it wired up now. Thanks to everyone here for all of your help. I'd be lost withou you. Charles
