1995 Volvo 850 wagon. Started to overheat 5 miles from home. slowed to 20 mph. Temp went back to normal. 3 miles from home oil light started blinking then stayed on. 1 mile from home lost compression and pulled over and had taken home by flatbed wrecker. Oil all over engine compartment. Everywhere. Checked oil, no water in it. First Volvo. Just bought it Sat. night and didn't make it home. Had to have shipped by flatbed. Lot bought from closed for weekend. It had overheated and I didn't want to damage it. Replaced thermostat Tuesday and took for test drive. Didn't overheat to 10 miles. 11 mile mark overheated. Added water and temp was fine. Left for home. Think reservoir cap bad but didn't make it back home to replace before oil dump. Any help is great as I'm not much of a mechanic and can't afford to have taken to shop.

Have you located the source of your oil leak? Check near the back of the cam cover/cylinder head. There is a rubber plug there that is known to occasionally blow out and cause oil problems similar to what you describe. IPD sells a bolt on device to help prevent this from occuring.
