re-gluing a side mirror to its mount? 700 1991

My mirror is wobbling around on on the mechanism. Is there a way to safely remove this and re-glue it to the mount?

Do it before the mirror falls off, both of mine did. One time a friend slammed the door and I heard a tinkling sound as it hit the ground and broke. I spent 30 minutes trying to find a replacement mirror, never did. Pick and pull wanted $35 for the entire mirror assembly which i bought because I never could just find the mirror part. Later my drivers side mirror started to wobble, before I had the thought of, lets see if i can pry the old one off and reglue it, it fell and broke on the ground. I found a small angular mirror by itself for $10 at Pep boys and used epoxy to glue it back on with some balled up paper towels and tape to keep the mirror in place while it dried. It looks funny because it uses only about two thirds of the previous space that the regular mirror used. Been four months now.

If this is what you mean....only the glass/plastic? mirror was coming detached from mine so I pulled it off to reaveal a flexible rubber plate. I then used black gasket silicone and aplpied a dab in the rear middle and luckily also this mirror fits in a frame which provides a lip where i put dabs of this silicone around the entire mirror. I used small wood clamps to keep the mirror from shifting till it dried.I cleaned the rubber plate with alcohol also..so far ..so good

At the bottom of the housing is a slot. You take a small flat head screw driver, there is a locking ring that slides either towards the car or away.(only moves about 1/4inch. That releases the mirror from the housing. If you glue that, you can never replace the mirror without replacing the entire housing. I used some silicon that stays flexible and put some on the "knubs". Hard to describe. I'll try to get a pic of the locking ring.

The 'mirror' is 3 pieces assembled as one unit; the glass, a black plastic backing, and a white plastic lockring. Then there's the swivel head it all attaches to. I've had both the glass come loose from its backing, and had the lockring come loose. To reattach the glass to the backing I used Barge cement, lasted several years. But if it's the lockring that came loose, that is a PITA. What Chilton's didn't tell me is that, after you align the pins and then find the little 'gears' on the lockring that you rotate by prying through the slot in the bottom, and you fish around til you get it to turn like aleekat said, about 1/4 inch, then it has to turn just a bit more til there's a click and it locks into place. If there isn't that firm click it won't lock and the mirror will fall out.

thanks, all.

yes, it is the glass coming loose from the backing board.

my mirror is also heated, so there must be a wire attached as well.

is it easier to disassemble the whole thing rather than attempt to re-glue "in situ"?

thanks

Just remove the mirror via the small slot on the bottom of housing. The wires just have slip on connectors. Then you can reglue.
