Very much appreciate the useful input.
But I have to say I am losing heart with the seeming continuous series of electrical problems with this car. Must have had 10 different issues in the past year.
- Flasher relay
- Lamp failure warning relay
- Climate Control "brain"
- Shift-lock switch
- Electric window switches
- and a few more I have forgotten for now....
I suppose I be will digging into this at the weekend (was looking forward to just drinking a few beers and eating some hotdogs and hamburgers).
Thanks guys,
Kev

last visit: Sat Nov 21 22:15 CST 2009[RELATED]Dear Turbine1,
May this find you well. In the shifter housing, there are a couple of switches and the wiring to them, e.g., the overdrive switch (in the shifter handle) and the p-n-p switch (in the shifter mechanism). I do not recall a post that described these switches emitting smoke. That said, there's a first time for everything.
There is also wiring to the light, that makes visible the shifter position.
It is possible that something, e.g., a coin, may have fallen into the shifter mechanism, and damaged the wire or created a short-circuit.
To test the overdrive switch, press it. Does the orange "up arrow" light - at the bottom of the instrument cluster - come on? If so, the switch is working correctly.
Does the car start normally, with the shift lever in "Park"? If so, the p-n-p switch probably is OK.
Please post back with your findings. Going into the shifter is not for the faint-hearted.
Yours faithfully,
Spook
