last visit: Thu Nov 19 18:29 CST 2009[RELATED]FWIW, We have the dyno test here in Northern California, and our '93 240 has passed pretty easily twice over the past three years. Our 240 wasn't originally certified to California emissions standards, and does run at the high end of the allowed NOx range, but has always passed.

last visit: Sat Nov 21 15:53 CST 2009[RELATED]Hello,
Just went through NJ inspection(Flemington)and they did not even have the dyno testing hooked up. Pre 95 cars get the high idle test only and the rest only get the OBDII checked. This was as late as June 28th so you should be good to go in July. I think the new regulations are for tightening emissions on new cars.

last visit: Thu Nov 19 21:11 CST 2009[RELATED]Hi Mario:
Thanks for the update. I was not sure of the 6/30 ruling if it applied to all registered vehicles or new cars. There is nothing on the DMV web site to confirm.
When you note pre '95 get the "high idle test" does that mean that the DMV still uses the exhaust sniffer and revs the engine in neutral-stationary park?
I wonder if a "no load" non dyno test is easier to pass than a Dyno "loaded" test?
Thanks for the update as I will tweak as best as I can by a complete tune up, filter changes, throttle body cleaning, oil/filt change, and check for vac leaks.
Hopefully, I will pass as noted I only sqeaked by and passed in July '07 by 1ppm NOX. All other readings were well within the limits. That is after a new CAT and O2 sensor.
Al

last visit: Sat Nov 21 15:53 CST 2009[RELATED]Hello,
If your car is in decent tune then it should be no problem. It is the old test where they bring the revs up to over 2500k. It only checks CO and HC content and NO NOX. I have 3 pre 95 cars all pass in the past year. In fact if your car is EFI it is very hard to fail. Good luck.

last visit: Fri Nov 20 12:53 CST 2009[RELATED]Before Texas required the ASM test, my '87 passed the 2-stage idle with flying colors.....and it didn't even have a cat. When I tried to pass my first ASM test, I failed NOX. Went to replace the cat and found the cat completely gutted. Not sure if that is a testament to the "cleanlyness" of Volvos or to the looseness of the requirements. '87s seem to be the most common to fail NOX on the ASM. With a reasonably well tuned car and a fairly new cat it is more than capable of passing the test. If you just have to pass a 2-stage idle test, I think you won't have any problems.

last visit: Sat Jul 4 17:23 CST 2009[RELATED]It's amazing what you guys have to put up with in those states. I was just telling my uncle who lives in NJ, who almost failed an emissions test on his 1960 MGA... that i just passed my old 79 Cornbinder (Scout)through inspection. It would have failed about a dozen tests in NJ, nothing wrong with my truck, it has been heavily modified in both drivetrain & suspension. But in NC if the vehicle is 10 years or older, it gets the horn & Light test, (They don't even pop the hood) then you are good for another year for 12 buxs...LOL

last visit: Sun Nov 22 09:01 CST 2009[RELATED]Last year in NC found out about the window tint test ($10), guess what, passenger side front window was too dark by 1%...FAIL! Three years ago, failed on a functioning license plate light that was missing a plastic lens... FAIL! One additional change starting this year in NC is that you have to have your inspection BEFORE you renew your registration, if you don't pass the test, you don't get plates!
All this is is another tax that pays the special interest groups that pushed the inspections in the first place, any guess who they are??? Yep, the automotive repair and service centers!
Don't worry about what the individual states are doing right now, pretty soon the federales will come up with their own test tax that will eliminate any car over five years old... I hope I'm wrong!

Oh well, next year a $10 safety check and that's it. I found it interesting that in NC cars too old to have OBDII get a safety only. For the NJ poster--I'd suggest going to the NJ State DMV website for the most accurate information.--Dave

Get in touch week after next. If any of you Brickboarders out there would like to spend a day at the race track we always can use volunteers--go to--- emraracing.org --- OR -- get yourself out on the track for not much money. Time Trial requires only normal production belts--helmets must be 2000 spec--loaners are available--instructors are assigned to beginners. -- Dave
