damn wheel questions 120-130

The one thing I need to get my 122 going again is tires... a craigslist ad popped up locally for a set of wheels and tires from an older Eagle Talon.. wheels 16 x either 6 or 6.5 is my guess, tires are 205/65-16.

Bolt pattern is correct, and my best research puts the offset on these wheels at +42mm. Seems somewhat borderline in every regard (mainly overall diameter)... but I'm thinking they might work (if they'll clear the calipers..) I have a coplete axle hub/spindle with attached caliper to bring if/when I look..

Any quick thoughts?

Guess I had that computer/camera cable after all...

I'm not that fond of the wheels.. the look or construction. Steel wheels with a fake alloy thing plastered on them. No wonder American cars don't hole their value... OK.. I won't get into that.

In any event, I reckon these wheels will work for now... I'll add 1/4 inch spacers to bring 'em out a bit.

the big problem.. .this poor car has been resting and neglected for nearly two years, and.. although she started right up even with that old gas, the rust that's coming through makes me sad... the car looked ok when I got it, but.. it came from the *SALT* Lake City area...

I guess more on that later. For now, she's got four tires that hold air, and the cost was less than mount and balance... so, we's doin' ok.

Pay no mind to that dog.. she's just doing her happy dance thing.

That's a fine looking ride Matt! I own worse than that! I sure wouldn't quibble much about that extra half inch... As you well know those 4:56s can use little help, Eh?

As for the dog... welllllll? Looks like one of those should be standard on Amazon wagons... especially with a happy dance!!! That is a great picture. It's real pretty up there.

What happened to Dan's Monday reports? I miss them!

64 220 (RIP, now he's parts on the hoof) - 65 220 - 68 220 (almost ready for the road), and a 66 130 (35k miles last year)

the fellow selling them erred on the tire size.. turned out they are 205/55-16, so.. actually a tad smaller in diameter than stock.. I realized that when I got them home. ah well, she's got overdrive...

You'll have to check with Dan on the weekly posts over there... basically though, not a lot of new things going on, so... most posts would be rather redundant...

Cheers...

I hope the rust in the gutter above the B post isn't as bad as I think it might be. Not an easy fix. Otherwise, looks good.

Thankfully no.. there is no rust in the gutters. What looks like rust in the picture is just pine needles, which were removed minutes after that picture was taken last night.

They look kind of 850ish. Is that a word? What the heck, you're up and running!

I don't see any problem with the wheels, but the tires might be a little too tall for you. 25.39" vs 26.49".

thanks... that's only an inch, which is only 1/2" in radius... and 1/2" added ground clearance.. is a good thing where I come from... I don't care about speedometer error or any of that.. heck, it'd make it that more relaxed on the freeway anyhow.

If I get 'em and they work, I'll post pics...

If the rims are 16 inch, you will have less problems with caliper clearance than you would if the rims were smaller diameter. What is the offset of the original rims on your car? I don't think that caliper clearance will be your main issue, I'd worry about the tires rubbing on the inside against suspension components or against the inner fenders on the front wheels when making a turn...

The clearance issue isn't with the diameter.. rather, its the shape of the inside 'dish' of the wheel... 14" wheels fit fine, if they don't collide with calipers.

That said.. I did buy the stuff.. too cheap to pass up. $60 for a set of four wheels nearly new tires, already mounted and balanced. Granted, cheap wheels.. I won't go into my opinions on that..

And they do work. I'll probably add about 1/4" spacers... but it gave me an excuse to get the old wagon out of the woods.... more on that tomorrow
