Cold engine, grab the upper hose, squeeze, hear a squish in the plastic reservor tank and a click in the thermostat housing. In a cold engine, shouldn't the thermostat be quiet?
I ask because of the jumpy thermostat gauge in the cluster and the possible bad thermostat issue.

i thought the exact same thing, i went and changed it thinking 'something broken', but no theres a small relief hole with a loose metal stud in it...it means the thermostat never totally closes...Daryl

I have a 16 year old daughter that is driving the car and I don't want to take any chances on overheating with such an inexpensive part.

The thermostats I see at the auto parts store for most cars also come in a fail-safe model for a little more money. The only way these can fail is by staying open, not closed. I see they're also available for Volvo.

Why would you get an OEM thermostat when you can get a fail-safe one and why wouldn't Volvo offer a fail-safe one?
