In fixing my son's a/c I happened upon that wonderful sticky black mastic "gorilla snot" in the junkyard. I pulled a ballof it loose and took it with me to seal the new a/c repair. I was amazed that after that many years it was still pliable and how good a job it does in sealing air leaks.
Who makes it and can it be bought? Or do I have to be a "grave robber" when I go to the pick/pull and get it out of the dead number series carcasses?
Just wordering...

Also needed if you replace the wiper motor. I didn't know that at the time and tossed the broken motor with the black glop still on it. Later I pulled the new one and used this gray block of... ?caulk? I found at the hardware store for about $3 to seal the shaft that goes through the firewall. Seems to be holding up OK. It was wrapped in white plastic and didn't have any brand or other name on it, about the consistency of modeling clay, found in the HVAC section.

"Butyl Tape" from a Volvo or BMW parts counter, or "3M Window Weld" from NAPA.
This stuff is what you need to re-glue the vapor barrier in your doors when you dismantle the door to repair the window or replace speakers.

I used a gob of it to secure my son's Sirius radio holder to the dash of the 240 (fortunately the dash is black also), in that the suction cup on the bottom would not hold on the dash's pebbly surface. I do not want the radio mounted on the windshield (obstructs view) in his car.
I have found a new friend in this stuff. 1001 Uses....

Try Home Depot. I think it's called butyl rubber.
In the caulking section (paint aisle in Canada) look for flat rolls used for window glazing. A thinner version of what was used for windshields.

Prestite tape : https://www.ackits.com/pc/250-292/Miscellaneous/250-292+-+Prestite+Tape they also have it in a 30 foot roll. Also available from Volvo and what I used on the 240 when I did the retrofit to R134. I bought a roll in a box on eBay so I'm set.

If you are talking about the black sticky stuff around the ac lines you must be talking about butyl. That stuff may be part of a 240's long life since you find it in strange places up under the dash or under the carpet. A lot of the windshields are held in with butyl.
You can find stuff called butyl at the hardware store, but a lot of it is marketed as a roof patch or as a weather seal. I have seen it in light gray and black colors a couple of times. Some of those have other compounds added to them and can make quite a mess. I am talking about the ones marketed as roof patches, they have a tar look with a granular additive that you do not want to attempt to use the way Volvo did. The gray stuff I bought is more viscous and even more sticky than the black stuff and not much use IMOH.
Bottom line is that I have yet to find an equivalent to what you find in the 240. I have not tried a glass installer however, that just might be the best place to start trying to find a tube. I know that they heat the stuff they use up before using it.
Regards,
Paul

I believe you are refering to body caulk. Napa sells it in a roll in a 12"x12" box. I bought some 10 years ago & am still using it. Also called window or body "dope"

I hate the stuff. My windshield is installed with it and some of it squeezed out on the inside of the windshield and got on my heat shield, my pants and the seat.
Anyone know what solvent will cut this stuff??

I agree with you--this stuff is a mess. I have the same situation you do--the mastic has stuck to the top of the sunshield and is all over the interior. I did get it off of the carpet and upolstery using an upolstery spot cleaner I got at Walmart or somewhere like that (it is a foam in a can and it has a built-in plastic scrub brush head). Worked pretty well, even if sometimes it seemed the stuff came off mainly due to friction.
I am going to scrape the stuff off the windshield with a razor. In an earlier post on windshield replacement it was said that "real" lacquer thinner will cut the stuff. I'm going to try that on the hard surfaces that still have the stuff on it.
Hope this works.
