last visit: Mon Nov 16 16:55 CST 2009[RELATED]Also needed if you replace the wiper motor. I didn't know that at the time and tossed the broken motor with the black glop still on it. Later I pulled the new one and used this gray block of... ?caulk? I found at the hardware store for about $3 to seal the shaft that goes through the firewall. Seems to be holding up OK. It was wrapped in white plastic and didn't have any brand or other name on it, about the consistency of modeling clay, found in the HVAC section.

This is the 3" wide version Volvo includes in their R134a conversion kit for the pre-91 (TXV) AC.

I do not want the radio mounted on the windshield (obstructs view) in his car.
I have found a new friend in this stuff. 1001 Uses....

last visit: Fri Nov 20 13:02 CST 2009[RELATED]You must have different (better) stuff. The butyl tape I have you wouldn't want to have anywhere a human (or worse, a pet) could come in contact with it in the summer. It does not come out of clothing, unless perhaps you launder with kerosene. When I get it on my hands by accident, I clean up with WD-40 before getting anything wet.

In the caulking section (paint aisle in Canada) look for flat rolls used for window glazing. A thinner version of what was used for windshields.

SAVE The stuff is called Butyl 200 1993

last visit: Fri Nov 20 20:20 CST 2009[RELATED]If you are talking about the black sticky stuff around the ac lines you must be talking about butyl. That stuff may be part of a 240's long life since you find it in strange places up under the dash or under the carpet. A lot of the windshields are held in with butyl.
You can find stuff called butyl at the hardware store, but a lot of it is marketed as a roof patch or as a weather seal. I have seen it in light gray and black colors a couple of times. Some of those have other compounds added to them and can make quite a mess. I am talking about the ones marketed as roof patches, they have a tar look with a granular additive that you do not want to attempt to use the way Volvo did. The gray stuff I bought is more viscous and even more sticky than the black stuff and not much use IMOH.
Bottom line is that I have yet to find an equivalent to what you find in the 240. I have not tried a glass installer however, that just might be the best place to start trying to find a tube. I know that they heat the stuff they use up before using it.
Regards,
Paul

last visit: Thu Jul 16 20:12 CST 2009[RELATED]I agree with you--this stuff is a mess. I have the same situation you do--the mastic has stuck to the top of the sunshield and is all over the interior. I did get it off of the carpet and upolstery using an upolstery spot cleaner I got at Walmart or somewhere like that (it is a foam in a can and it has a built-in plastic scrub brush head). Worked pretty well, even if sometimes it seemed the stuff came off mainly due to friction.
I am going to scrape the stuff off the windshield with a razor. In an earlier post on windshield replacement it was said that "real" lacquer thinner will cut the stuff. I'm going to try that on the hard surfaces that still have the stuff on it.
Hope this works.
Mike
