functions served by the 8-pin harness? 200

Hi,

Recently, member Pageda posted the pinout for the 8-pin connector on my son's '83 wagon. It was:

#1..SB....Oil pressure sender (SB = black)
#2...Y....Water temperature gauge sender
#3...R....Alternator D+/61 (the thin red wire on the alt. back)
#4........Empty -- used on carb. models
#5..BL-Y..Starter solenoid (two thin wires there, note how they attach)
#6........Empty -- used on Diesel models
#7........Empty -- used on Turbo models
#8........Empty -- used on Diesel models

Per Bentley, #s 1, 2, and 3 appear to be gauge/idiot light functions (and would not prevent the car from operating?), but what is the function of the #5 wire to the starter?

I've got to try rebuild his harness tomorrow, so I'm trying to figure out where to look if something goes wrong.
