Thanks to all of you! I have bitten the bullet and taken her to a shop....another man is gonna be touching my baby, but alas i can handle a lot of task but this one sounded like maybe id be better off letting a shop take care of, there is a place off the beaten path, but hes been in business a long time and all i ever see in his repair lot are old Bricks, Benz, VW, and the sort. it's in Myrtle Beach, SC, called Auto Ott.....i hope it goes well.

Thanks to all of you on your replies.... ill let ya know what it turns out to have been.

OK i got under there and looked, not sure i can tell what is what...im going to guess the spring is sprung, what other parts do i need to replace or must replace at the same time i do this? I don't have it in the budget right now to have car problems...can i do just one this one side? or MUST i do both rear's?

Thank You

I agree with the others, unlikely it's the spring, but it is the easiest to change! Support the car well and safely, Take off the tire, remove the shock bolts, and the axle will drop low enough so that you can easily pull the spring out. In fact one "problem" with replacing shocks is that the spring some times inadvertently falls out.
Once you take the tire off, it should be obvious if the spring is broken. The shock could make noise if one end has become detached, also obvious once the tire is off.
BUT, most likely the trailing arm bushing, and THAT is tough job.

It doesn't sound like you should do anything till you actually determine what's wrong. Even if the spring is worn and sagging it wouldn't cause the banging you describe. A broken spring might do that but should be easy to see. Sounds more like a blown out trailing arm bushing--the big one under the rear axle. Look again with a lamp--look at the cross bolt relative to the diameter of the bushing--it should be dead center. Have someone gently push on the rear bumper while you look to see if the movement of the crossbolt seems to be independant of the bushing.

Better to do both sides at the same time. If one's gone the other is not far behind.

A totally shot Trailing arm bushing on that side will drop the car about 1" total. If thecar is sagging more then that I would look at the Spring and it's mounting areas.
Shocks/struts take the bounce out of the springs, they do not hold the car up in any way

Did you look underneath for visible damage? Bounce car up & down by hand?

No struts in the rear, just springs and shocks. Sagging could be caused by weak or broken suspension spring. Shock absorbers don't support the weight of the car. Could also have worn suspension bushings, the rear trailing arm bushing commonly wears out.
