92 245 Torque converter failure??? 200

Okay, AW70, 50K miles on it since rebuild, trans fluid is perfect, but I'm experiencing "shudder" up to 2100 RPM. Please note this car does have a manual trans rear end ratio. The fluid is bright red, no leaks, fluid level is perfect. Engine and trans mounts are 3 months old, and the ECU is throwing no codes, ie 111.

I have experienced torque converter failure on V8 Chevy products from the late 80s and it feels like its exactly the same. The thing that has me confused is that I have NEVER heard of a 240 smoking a torque converter! Could it be due to the rear end ratio causing an excessive load at lower RPMs?

Did your tail shaft have a new bushing put in it when it was rebuilt? Before I replaced my AW71 I had what could of been a shudder. The bushing looked worn and I had to use that tail shaft so I replace the bushing.I can't say the bushing was the problem Because I also had shifting problems as well. ood Luck,Charlie

Yes, the trans rebuild was complete including the rear bushing. When I pulled the trans from the donor and found the Volvo factory rebuild sticker, I did pull the pan and rear housing to ensure the job was done right, and yes, the installer noted the installation mileage (a rarity), as a result, I know the rebuilt trans had 30K miles on it when I got my hands on it.

"Bleen" has all new engine and trans mpunts, as well as new driveshaft U-joints, center support bearings, bearing carrier, and even that annoying spring and spring cup! Personally, I hate chasing that dang spring around the garage floor when it doesn't seat right!

I'm considering an in-car trans valve body rebuild, if that doesn't work, its time for an AW-71L transplant.

I'd look at the mounts - trans & motor; the carrier; and the TABs.

I've not had any shuddering w/ a trans failure.

Did you replace the converter when you had the trans rebuilt? I have bought some aftermarket and reman converters over the years and for the most part, have had good luck with them. I have had one that the sprag would not disengage, and several that had the same shudder that you mention. I have been advised (By Ford/Lincoln/Mercury) to try a fluid additive, but it wound up having to have a new converter. I know it's a bear of a job, but do you have a known good converter? There is normally nothing for the end user to repair with a torque converter. Have you checked the bolts to make sure that they are not loosening up?

The original torque converter came with the trans and did not have an issue when originally installed.

If you still have the original converter, stuff it back in. They seldom fail if they were good originally.

Stickbuider,

Sorry I wasn't clear, the original one is what I have installed currently. If I have to drop the trans for a torque converter change, I'll probably swap in an AW-71L with lock-up converter. If anything, it'll be a 1 MPG gain.

My AW70 tranny experience is limited... but I had a similar occurrence with my M47. Turns out the flexible coupling (between trans output shaft and driveshaft) died, 2 months after I replaced it. Simple visual inspection was all that was needed to make that determination. Not sure if the auto-trans 240's use that coupling, but it's a good place to look. Also, the tranny tailshaft bushing might have given up the ghost. Any leakage there?

Seat of my pants says if you've got TC problems, you'll see metal in the oil real soon. I really doubt your tall final drive (3.31, right?) is responsible.

Jorrell,

Do you think you are feeling the drive shaft thumping in weakened rubber of the center carrier bearing?
