Small clock repair - cap and resistor values 200

I'm finally getting around to fixing a batch of small clocks for a fellow brickboarder. I've had them laying around for a while.

Anyways, I don't have a dremel tool, but a large pipe cutter worked very well for cutting open the case. I cracked a circuit board on the one with which I was too hasty - I tightened down too much on one rotation, and it bent the case in just a tad; it made the extraction of the circuit board a very tight fit.

So I'm replacing the capacitors: they're marked "100/16 M5," so they're 100 uF. I read a post suggesting replacing with "220 microfarad 35 VDC... Radio Shack p/n 272-1029." I suppose I'll try it, although I'm not sure if the difference in values is an upgrade, or because it's the closest match available.

My biggest question is: does anyone know the value of the resistor that's in the circuit? The one that I could read well looked like brown(1) red(2) brown(1), with a silver tolerance band. Is this correct, and is my judgement of 120 ohms also correct?

I don't plan on replacing all of the resistors, but on one clock the resistor was burned completely out of the circuit, and fell into my hands when the case was opened. The colored bands were burned from visibility.

thanks for reading,

Josh in IL

I just got through doing this fix on mine about 3 weeks ago. Radio Shack does carry the correct 100 mfd capacitors in their inventory. They are about $1.29 each. The fix worked like a charm, but I uncrimped the bezel from the can, and unsoldered the ground post. The capacitors are 100 mfd and are rated up to 35 VDC. The part number is 272-1028. They have the correct radial leads, while others will have the leads on each end. Either will work, but the one listed works best.

Hi Josh,

If the colors are as you see them, indeed it is 120 ohms. You may be surprised to see the new one go up in smoke if replacing the caps doesn't correct the short that caused the old resistor to burn. Test it before buttoning it up.

I've always used 100 microfarad caps to replace them. There's no benefit to oversizing them on purpose, but I suppose there would not be any harm in using a pair of 220's if that's what you have on hand. The voltage rating only needs to be equal to or greater than 16V.

If you're doing a lot of the clocks, you might find you get very good at just uncrimping the bezel. It is always behind the plastic, so even if you do wrinkle it some it won't show. I am imagining Cool Hand Luke in there with the pipe cutter.

If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
