M47 noise - throwout bearing or transmission? 200 1989

Just picked up a 1989 245DL with an M47, 148k miles. The car makes a knocking noise in neutral that goes away when I depress the clutch pedal - classic throwout bearing noise. But the noise is present in 1st/2nd/3rd gear, more so if the car is accelerating quickly. There is no whine in any gear and no noise in 4th or 5th gear. Is this likely the throwout bearing (it's the original bearing) or something else?
