My dad was on his 3rd engine in his by the time he got 135K on it,
none really the fault of the engine. One was a water hose failure in
a downpour in Houston in the middle of traffic and one was an exploding
(greatly overloaded) battery.
I think the biggest problems are those inherent to diesels: noise, smell,
tractorlike power curve and weight. Seems like any time you try to make
them more like a gasoline engine in terms of the above complaints, you
greatly reduce longevity and reliability. They are not a hotrodder's engine!
