Of course, "quit drinking" is, as the saying goes, easier said than done. I've quit smoking about 70 times, myself. Having known quite a few alcoholics, though, here's how I see it. There are (basically) two different types, (A)"functioning" and (B)"non-functioning". A guy that drinks a 12-pack of Schlitz a day, but has a house, car, steady job, family, etc. is type A. A guy that goes through 2 gallons of coffee brandy a day, lying unwashed on somebody else's couch, bumming smokes, telling BS stories about hanging out with Jimmy Buffet, that's type B. Quite often, type A can maintain his life indefinitely, beer is almost like his insulin shot. Type B, however, is in a slow spiral, and may eventually become type C (argueing with yourself under a bridge).
