Lightweight fun car?

Now that the 285 is pretty much completed, I'm thinking ahead to my next project car. The V8 wagon is a GT musclecar - brawny, torquey, relatively heavy. I'd like to go for something totally the opposite in character: super light, lightning reflexes, droptop, minimal creature comforts and faster than stink. Oh, it should be street legal, so I don't have to tow it to the track and can drive it in the mountains.

A Lotus Super 7 or replica comes to mind, though I find them a bit unattractive. How about a Midget or Sprite with a turbo rotary? Any kit cars out there that fit this profile?

A 600 CBR would supply the thrills but wife.com won't get on one, and I'd like her to share the excitement.

The budget, of course, is not unlimited, and I would enjoy building it myself.

I look forward to your suggestions!
