"if everyone has a degree, what good is it?"-
Ouch, really? What good is it for the population of our country to know stuff and posses developed mental skills? What good is it for the "average" base of knowledge to be as high as possible? That reminds me of the old Reagan quote; "education for its own sake is a waste" which was about the dumbest thing I have ever heard (unless you build a career out of exploiting a lack of knowledge of course). I assume you look at education as an economic thing and nothing more like, apparently, Reagan did? I'm glad the ancient Greeks and others throughout the centuries had a different view. Economics as we understand it now hasn't always been this way and won't always be this way it's all short term and rather fleeting. The desire to better one's self and consequently the species through understanding is timeless and the best way to begin understanding is education. Education isn’t a means to an end it is the end that we should seek to achieve because it has inherent value.
