While I can have some sympathy with a football player not wanting to loose his chance at a better life doing something he is obviously skilled at, colleges and universities are not where he should be. Football has used this system as their farm league for far too long, and by ending that, you'll find players like this will be where they should be. baseball and hockey both have farm leagues, and in ice Hockey, if you choose the university path, it is unlikely you will make the major NHL teams, except perhaps feeder teams for a while. The path for that is the Juniors.
As you say, the lives of professional athletes are short, except perhaps for horseback riders and golfers. Jockeys last an amazingly long time, provided they are small enough so they don't kill their kidneys reducing.
What is ironic is that in a society that so worships athletes, we have so much trouble with obesity and things like childhood diabetes from poor diet.
