Whether the operators get paychecks that say "USAF" or "CIA" I can't tell you. It will be interesting to see what these programs look like with the benefit of hindsight in ten or twenty years. Some people are claiming that the drones are the best thing since sliced bread, others are saying that they are not "surgical" enough and they are spawning new enemies and fueling propaganda and recruitment because of the collateral damage and the fact that they are only as good as the reconnaissance on the ground. Personally, I think they are the right tool for the job at hand and if we can minimize collateral damage and the subsequent political fallout I think that would make them even more effective in the long run. I also like the fact that they sort of "end run" a lot of political considerations like they are doing in Pakistan. We were lied to about the effectiveness of "smart" bombs during the first Gulf War they weren't actually worth a shit without Special Forces on the ground marking targets with homing devises. Maybe some pretty slick "James Bond" type stuff is in order with the drones to better "mark" our targets for the drone's hell fire missiles; lasers from spy satellites in space or radioactive dust on the clothing of the target. We will know that these drones have reached their pinnacle when one drone can be sent out seeking the unique pheromone signature of a particular man and kill him with one bullet from a mile away leaving no collateral damage. It could be broadcast on t.v. like the killer robot fire dog in the book Fahrenheit 451. -- MORALITY is doing what is right no matter what you are told RELIGION is doing what you are told no matter what is right.
