Is Consumer Reports to be believed?

I'm looking at a '02 V70 or XC70. Consumer Reports reliability survey of 99-01 S/V 70s and XC70s is pretty bleak. Particularly concerning the engine, transmission and drive train. Slight improvement in the '02 model, at least with the major engine issues. According to their survey, things don't improve until '04. Do you put much stock into their survey? Think it's accurate? Will my '02 transmission blow up as I drive away from the seller as he laughs maniacally?
