Keith Olbermann is your God....

No doubt competing with the US in defense spending sped up the demise of the USSR, and their suspicion that the SDI could be for real may have increased Gorbachev's interest in negotiating an arms deal.

Whether outspending the Soviets militarily was actually a deliberate strategy of the Reagan administration, or just the result of collusion between the CIA and the "military industrial complex", is still a subject for debate. The former, either deliberately or through incompetence, provided grossly exaggerated reports on Soviet military capability, and the latter certainly thrived on the arms race expenditures.

My take is that the USSR would have collapsed anyway under the burden of its thoroughly discredited ideology and political system, bureaucratic incompetence, corruption, inefficient centrally planned and controlled economy, and international over-extension. There are some lessons for us in that, but it's particularly the last item that we should heed.

There were two major nails in the USSR's coffin. One was Brezhnev's Afghanistan adventure which Andropov inherited and Gorbachev brought to a close through withdrawal. The US definitely deserves credit for contributing to the Soviets' failure in Afghanistan by supplying funds and arms (especially Stinger missiles) to the Mujahideen, although Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, and especially Saudi Arabia played significant, frequently ignored, roles.

The other was Saudi Arabia's using its power within OPEC to keep oil prices down. This benefited the Western economies and further undermined the already weak USSR economy by severely reducing the value of its major export product, oil. Whether the Saudis did so out of religious and strategic anti-communist convictions, or because Ronald Reagan persuaded them to do so can be endlessly speculated upon. If any American politician deserves a piece of the credit, I suspect it might be G.H.W.Bush.
