New ride

I have always cherished my past and present Volvos. The seats are sooo comfortable, and the turbo makes it go fast and rather frugal at the same time.

So why didn't I buy a new Volvo? Perhaps it is because the new 3.2 engine goes in the wrong mpg direction. Perhaps it is because I needed to be able to seat 5 adults in comfort for long trips (2 - 10 hours). And I need even more space behind the 2nd row for hauling stuff than the V70 has.

What I bought has a 3L Diesel engine with a 7 speed autobox. Only 19mpg around town, but 26-27mpg on the highway at 75mph. Yeah, I know, diesel is more expensive than premium gasoline, by 50cents. But my highway cruise range is over 600 miles and I like tanking up only once a month.

With it's 6000lbs, I don't feel pot holes any more. And I am finally able to see through the windows in all of the SUVs so I can see down the road. My wife and daughter like looking out over the bridge guard rails and seeing the views.

Of course it came with the useless nav junk. But the cruise control has a double switch, a soft bump gives/takes 1 mph form present setting and a hard bump gives/takes 5mph changes. Pretty neat. As is the 3 zone climate control.

So why am I embarassed to be seen driving this GL320 with the big piece symbol in the grill?

I still miss my 164
