Early 90's Jetta?

Does anyone have an opinion, good or bad, on a 1992 Jetta 5spd? A coworker has one that he wants to sell and I am thinking about buying it for a commute vehicle because, according to him, it gets 35 mpg at 70-75 mph. The car has "only" 132,000 miles compared to my '86 240 daily driver at almost 310,000.

What I've read so far on the 'net is a mixed bag. Handles well, relatively safe, brisk acceleration with a 5spd BUT....not a reliable car or one that is cheap to fix.

Suppose I could go buy a 10 year old Civic if I really wanted cheap/economical transportation, but I've driven this Jetta before and like the way that it drives. Fahrfenugen or whatever.
