A Prediction

Hillary will win the primaries. She'll do it dirty if she has to by litigating for Florida and Michigan delegates.

The Democrats will lose the general election again.

Yet again, the East coast sophisticated types with their pinkies in the air have chosen the wrong candidate. Boy could you hear the rejoicing in the reporters' voices.

The root of the problem in this party seems so obvious. They refuse to understand the ill effects of the '68 convention; the democratization of the primary process; the destruction of the first truly popularly elected president in history, Jimmy Carter; and then rescinding their democratic spirit with the ridiculous concept of super-delegates. In short, the Democratic party leaders lie to themselves again and again. I think if they came clean with themselves, they'd understand why they can't win, why they lost the congress despite a long legacy of prosperity under their rule and a very recent run of sustained economic success.

If you doubt this thing about Carter, ask how he couldn't get a Democratic congress to pass a bill; a congress that had been Democratic for 40 plus years. And then ask yourself why so many Democrats lost seats in 1980. This even though it was clearly Nixon's price controls, along with his destruction of faith in government, that wrecked the economy in the seventies. All kinds of silly, simple-minded myths have clouded all of this, but it's all right there to see plainly. The Democrats very forcefully tried to remove Carter from the ticket, and failing that handed the election to Reagan thinking he'd screw things up so much that it would be a gimme in '84.

Since then, the super-delegates and elder primary goers, the party elite chose the wrong candidate in '84, Mondale over Hart, and did it again with Dukakis and again with Kerry.

I heard Geraldine Ferraro on the radio today, lying to herself and the country again, retelling the origin myth of super-delegates. I love how this woman says nineteen hundred and eighty. If there was a more formal way to say eighty, she'd use that too. Let's run her again! She's so clearly superior. Inspirational? Well, not in your life. But she's superior.

Maybe it's not the hatred and mob mentality that the Republicans have tapped into that's the winning formula*. Maybe it's the Democrats' inability to understand themselves.

So Democrats, you've done it again. You've picked the "superior choice" and will let the worst party in history waltz in yet again. Let the worst, most pessimistic and negative era in this country's history resume!
