What is happening with all of this advertising?
The brickboard is experimenting with premium advertising. This means that larger companies with more ad revenue to throw around will be seen in a few placements on the site. In the short period of time that this has been occuring, ad revenues have doubled.
Google manages all of the financial matters involved in ads. This allows the administrators of this site to focus on usability and other user focused activities.
This is not an effort to turn this site into nothing but an ad revenue stream. It is an effort to pass the administration of advertising off to an auction approach so that more time can be focused elsewhere. Recent usability changes are a sign of the success of this effort and more are on the way. Ads will pay the bills to keep the site online.
Why have ads at the bottom in addition to the top of a post?
The ads on the bottom of the site tend to be smaller companies and some are familiar to Volvo enthusiasts. Since Google ads works as an auction, it is unlikely that smaller companies will have any placement when larger companies want the same space. Placing the ads on the bottom allows more placements and a better chance for small companies to be placed on the site.
