We own both a V70 GLT and an S70, both '98s. A few months ago the turbo ate its AMM (temp unit). As I'm sure it's original, car only has 60k on it, I just bought a used one. Fine. Yesterday I had to smog our S70. The car has always been a little sluggish and mileage was lower than its predecessor, but no CE lights, no other problems, and it is barely driven so I ignored it. However yesterday it barely passed NOX, so this morning I took apart the airbox. I found that the hot air flap never closes. I am going to check the GLT too, bet it's also stuck and killed the AMM. For the life of me I cannot figure how it works. FCPG shows a conventional, wax pellet thermostat for 98, but clearly that's not what it uses. For 1999, no airbox thermostat is listed anyplace on line. This is a late '98 S70. Was the 99 airbox installed early? There is vacuum to what I expect is a thermostatic valve in the cover of the airbox. This ports vacuum to the diaphragm connected to the hot air flapper. However when I apply vacuum to the diaphragm, all it does is pull the flapper closed more, allowing nothing but hot air in. I blocked it open and took the car for a drive. Could not believe how much better it ran when hot. Idles better too. Can anyone help me decipher what is supposed to be going on here? I'm stumped, and I don't have a manual for the 70 series.
