I have recently purchased a 1998 v70 na wagon that supposedly needs a head gasket. The car has 280k on it so I'm thinking that I should just go on and replace the engine. I also own a 93 850 with a bad trans. So my first question is what would I have to do to my 93 motor to make it work in the 98? Or what is my best option for an engine, latest year and lowest mileage , to fit the car? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your 1993 engine is a bit different than the 98. You don't want to try swaping them, the electronics would be a nightmare. Best bet is to have the head removed and cleaned up. The block usually lasts a long time, but you might want to change out the bearings. Or a swap with a low mileage junk yard engine.
