last visit: Sun Nov 1 20:11 CST 2009[RELATED]It's probably the clutch gap thing. On Volvospeed some people had success cutting the sensor line but not 100% success and that sensor is there to protect from damage. This is about the 850 but the same applies to other models:
http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/80181-850-ac-clutch-gap-fix/
My 98 S70 had the same problem - seemed to happen more when the car was hot (heat waves, stuck in traffic, just when you need it the most!)
It seems to me this is a better fix because it is the root of the problem not a bypass. I tried it first with some washers cut a section out, did not use adhesive. My AC compressor was on all the time (even when turned off) because the washers were too thick. Luckily they came out after a few weeks anyway. So I re-did it with a cut up credit card, superglued in place this time. Bread ties did not work for me they kept breaking.

last visit: Tue Aug 25 19:29 CST 2009[RELATED]It also could be the temp control sensor, about $50 at the dealer. I had the same sort of issue. Next time it happens pop the hood and see if the AC lines (back by the fire wall) are frozen, if they are that's the problem. The sensor is located inside the car.
What I think happened is the system froze and cut out. Then you shut it off and the system thawed, then you turned it on after it thawed and it worked.
There is a posting about that somewhere on brickboard from about 2 years ago. This is where I found out about the fix! Maybe you can find it by using a search from my username. It's a real easy fix!

last visit: Sat Nov 21 15:09 CST 2009[RELATED]Possible issues:
The engine got too hot and the ECU turned off the AC. Check your temp gauge on the dash next time.
The compressor got too hot and shut itself down. Some folks have bypassed the compressor temp sensor.
The fan relay for the engine is not working at high speed, just low.

last visit: Sat Nov 21 15:09 CST 2009[RELATED]Your temp gets down to 45F? That is very nice. It is supposed to cycle like that. When the clutch gap gets too large, it will no longer engage the clutch. Rust color is also normal.

last visit: Fri Aug 7 20:17 CST 2009[RELATED]Measure the clutch gap. If it's greater than .025" the clutch won't engage when the ambient temperature gets in the 90's. It will only get worse. The proper way to fix it is to remove the clutch faceplate and remove shims until the gap is around 0.015". Plastic or metal shims can be inserted in the clutch plate to close the gap but I think that's only a temporary fix. Search for instructions on AC clutch fix.
Good luck.

last visit: Sat Nov 21 15:09 CST 2009[RELATED]There is a temp sensor at the compressor, if it gets too hot the compressor shuts off. Try it some time in your driveway: with the engine hot and the AC no longer working, spray hose water through the passenger side of the condenser/radiator and I bet the AC clutch will engage.
The engine fan MUST turn on when the AC is on. If not, check your fan relay.

last visit: Tue Aug 11 14:30 CST 2009[RELATED]Hey Klaus, you are correct..at times when the AC failed, the cooling fan was not coming on..I got a chance to see this when it failed today, the AC stopped and moments later, the coolant began to overflow in our 98 deg. heat..i stopped the car and open the hood, and the fan was not on...volvo had an recall on 2008-2009 models for this problem..looks like i will be buying a fan module to start. or do you know of a way to bypass this keep the fan on all the time..thanks, kyvolvo..

last visit: Sat Nov 21 15:09 CST 2009[RELATED]Probably just the fan relay if the coolant temp gauge on the instrument cluster did not go into the red. Turning on the AC must also turn on the engine fan at the same time, everytime.
Because you have a lot of bugs down there, try flushing out the fins on the radiator and condenser with a garden hose. Right through the grill at "high" pressure, but don't use a pressure washer. You will be amazed at what comes out!
