Pop your old inner workings into the new shell and you are good to go. You can also buy complete replacement units, new and used on ebay, but they will need to be programmed to work on the car-this used to be a dealer only type of service but I could be wrong. I recently had my Honda transponder key programmed at a local locksmith and that used to be a dealer only items a fews years ago.

To my knowledge, Volvo still owns the software and does not share.
If you still have the inner workings, buy a new case and move the electronics. The key for the car should still be able to unlock the driver's door.
Some dealers charge an arm and a leg to reprogram a new remote, others do it for free if you are a good customer. It only take 2 minutes for the 1997-1998 cars. Remember, your car does not need a software "download", just a programming update. Make sure the dealer's service advisor knows this.
