last visit: Thu Jul 2 12:25 CST 2009[RELATED]Well, I've made progress with subject problem. First off, I want to thank you for your assistance and guidance with this problem. While I restore old Nashes and Ramblers, that technology does not help me much with this Volvo!
If I could bounce a couple of ideas, I would appreciate it. This one had the code 2-2-1. I replaced the fuel fitler. Checked for Vac leaks (none.) Went and bought a fuel pressure testing kit and just checked pressure, found 24 psi. manual says we need 43.5. Ah ha! Next I pulled off the P reg return line to make sure nothing was returning to the tank with lower than required pressure. Line was dry. No line leaks anywhere on the pressure side, front to back.
Therefore, I am thinking there is nothing else to the system other than the fuel pump. Is that correct? If so, sounds as if I need to get a new pump coming my direction.
Anticipating this job, I looked in the manual which says one must drop the gas tank. I guess that means there is no provided service access through the floor (this is a station wagon.) Have you ever had to replace an 850 fuel pump and managed to do it without dropping the tank?
Many thanks again for any information you can give.
Jim Dworschack

Remove the retaining screws from the luggage compartment front floor panel. Pull the panel to the rear to release the front mountings and remove the panel.
Then remove the access panels. Follow the wires to the connector and unplug them. There will be zip ties to cut. Don't forget to clean the dust and dirt before you unscrew the cap.
Read Will's post below re: aftermarket.

last visit: Sat Nov 21 21:14 CST 2009[RELATED]Drop the tank??? Only with AWD, which you don't have.
Remove the carpet from behind the rear seat. You will find 2 inspection plates. The one on the passenger side is the fuel sender, the other is the fuel pump. The plastic nuts can be removed by a pair of pliers, but turn them upside down with the handles doing the turning. Worked great for me.
The fuel line to the engine has a yellow tape on it, don't get the two lines confused :) Replacing the pump is fairly easy. Some of the after market pumps are noisy compared to OEM.

last visit: Thu Jul 2 12:25 CST 2009[RELATED]Hi Klaus,
A thank you for your help and a follow up as to final results of the low fuel lpressure probelem. I ordered another pump and when it came, I took the old unit from the tank.Turned out the pump had worked loose, including the clamp holding the rubber line and slid down a little, allowing some of the gas to spray out within the tank. I just snugged all back up, and the car is running great again, without the new expensive fuel pump!
My wife is a happy person, besides I have something off my to-do list.
Thanks again!

last visit: Sat Nov 21 15:16 CST 2009[RELATED]Which manual says the tank must be dropped? The sedan's have an access panel in the trunk allowing relatively easy access to the tank/pump. I cannot think of a reason that the wagon would be any different.
Did the pressure at the rail change when the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator was removed? Did you check the pressure at the valve between the pump and filter (under the car)? Might be worth trying just to eliminate any doubt before changing the pump.
FWIW I've had good luck with the aftermarket replacement pump that FCPGroton sells. Much cheaper than OEM. It's noisier than stock, but does the trick.

last visit: Thu Jul 2 12:25 CST 2009[RELATED]Thanks for your reply to my question about the occassional power loss that is getting more frequent. I replaced fuel and air filters, spark plugs have been recently replaced. Upon checking codes I find 2-2-1 that the manual says "long term fuel trim part load, upper limit." I could find no explanation for this or probable causes in the manual, and am wondering if you can shed light on what this means I should look for.
Hopefully related, the car often starts with a normal brief cranking, but other times must be cranked over for up to 30 seconds before starting, running badly for a few seconds and then seemingly clearing itself, settle down to normal good running.
Thanks for any additional help you can provide! Jim Dworschack

last visit: Sat Nov 21 21:14 CST 2009[RELATED]This isn't easy from this end of the WWW. The 2-2-1 usually means there is a small vacuum leak around the intake manifold.
I would also check the vacuum line that runs from the fuel pressure relay, close to cyl #1 and on the fuel injector rail, to the vacuum tree. On my 1995 it was a clear line, except when my FPR failed the line had gasoline in it. And the car started slowly in the morning with a black puff of smoke out of the exhaust.
