Fluids XC 2003

Howdy,

I've been thinking lately about the fluids in my car. What's the complete list of fluids to keep up with? Just thought it would be nice to have this all in one place as I'd like to systematically replace them with new. Have had my used '03 for almost a year and get the feeling that I should take care of this stuff. Also, what type of fluid to use for each. BTW- I have of course been changing my crankcase oil :) A little TOO often if you ask me. Third party warranty..

-coolant,
-crankcase,
-bevel gear,
-transmission,
-brakes,
-steering,
-transfercase,
-rear differential,
..
..

What am I missing?

Thanks!!

Yaleh.

Fluids V70 1998

I don't have one of the newer p2 cars, but I can help you out a bit in terms of what I know about the recommended fluids for my slightly older brick.

-coolant - aluminum rated seems to be the big issue, though it also seems that it's not hard to find aluminum rated coolant at the local hardware place. Volvo is the best, but I'm told GM Dex-cool is fine, and that is what I have in mine right now. I am going to be doing my timing belt this spring and am considering replacing with Volvo coolant, but it is expensive. Change every 2 years.

-crankcase - oil as rated by the little graph in your user's manual. Normally 10W-30 unless it's really cold (-10C) then 5W-30. Synthetic is best, but dino & blends are fine if your intervals are smaller. Volvo/Mann filters are best, but others are usually fine too.

-bevel gear - (only if you have AWD) for my car : http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo/1311206/V70/awd_bevel_gear_oil.html in short: Fully Synthetic, 75W-90 GL-5. Very expensive from the dealer, but you should be able to find this elsewhere. You might need to call Volvo to find out what yours is, but I think the bevel gears are the same.... Change every 50k miles?

-transmission - My car's 4-speed takes regular DEXRON III ATF, synthetic is best. Yours takes synthetic 3309 or Toyota fluid (I think it's called T-IV).
Change every 75k miles?/5 years.

-brakes - Mine takes DOT 4+. Change every two years.

-steering - mine takes regular DEXRON III ATF (synthetic is best) or synthetic power steering fluid.

-transfercase - not sure what you're referring to

-rear differential - (only if you have AWD) I'm not sure about this, though we discussed it here: AWD Rear Diff Fluid Change? Basically I think the bevel gear oil would be fine, but Klaus suggested the oil is cheaper at the dealer, so maybe a GL-4 oil instead. I've been meaning to look up the rear-diff fluid change specs for the 940/960/S90 because my car uses the rear end out of one of those cars. I don't know about the rear end in yours. Change interval? 200k? 10 years? ??

I think that's it.

Thanks for the info jadnhm.

I might be using incorrect terminology, but I meant the awd haldex unit I guess.

I'm still trying to get a picture of the drivetrain.

I now think I understand? it goes this way:
motor->
transmission (includes driver side front axle)->
bevel/angle gear (includes passenger side front axle and output to rear train->
haldex->
rear differential.

So in saying transfercase I meant Haldex.

p2 power steering is for sure synthetic.

p2 transmission is that 3309 stuff.

Thanks

You'll need to get someone with a Haynes manual or VADIS (or call Volvo?) to find out what fluid goes into the haldex system.

The early AWD system used a viscous clutch, and the fluid cannot be easily changed in these units as they are sealed (welded).
