Re: Help RPM sensor bracket brocken[200/1989] posted by chris herbst on

I swear it, I was just going to post a warning about this. It is a common problem in the later 200 and 700 cars. In fact, I just saw this happen the other day on a 740T.
The problem is, the RPM sensor gets stuck in the hole in the bracket. The bracket fits onto the rear of the engine block. There is only one way to get the bracket off, and that is to pull the tramsmission back. If you are lucky, you will be able to get your hands in there to get the old pieces of the bracket out. If not, you have to yank the trans out of the car altogether. The 700 has way more room to reach back there than does the 240.
The design is truly pathetic. You'll see when you take it out. It lacks strength and is prone to breakage if you pry on the thing to get the (presumably stuck) RPM sensor out of the hole.
Never pry the RPM sensor out of the bracket. Spray a tiny bit of penetrant around it if you have to, but not enough to leak down on the clutch if it's a manual trans car. And if you have the trans out for any reason, take the RPM sensor out--whether or not you reuse it--and coat it LIGHTLY with a film of grease. That will avoid the problem, should the sensor need replacement in the future.
