740 chip upgrade: more news[200/1987] posted by TT on

See message below from the nice Dutch fellow at BSR:

Hello Josh!

It's nice to know that my information about upgrading is apreciated.
It's not often i get questions about tuning fronm the USA, so it's very
interesting for me too!

Okey. Here are some details about the point of upgrading.
The the chip builds on incresing the turbopressure. But it's not enough just
to do that, so we have to upgrade the program in the ECU, so that the
ignition and injection timing matches the higher turbopressure to avoid
engine damage. And by doing this, we also optimize the conbustion so that
the fuel consumption reduces. This results in lower emission outlet.

So, you get more power, lower fuel consumtion and cleaner conbustion.

You'll have to excuse my english, its a bit rusty, so i'm not sure that all
my words are correct, but i hope you understand.

Hope the information about the chip function, was understandable.

I have some informationsheets on chipupgrade to Volvo,VW, Audi and Saab
cars, so if you are interested i can translate them to english and send them
to you on mail.

Thank you for your appreciation.

Have a nice day!

STS Tuning, Jahn.

I'll forward the translation of tech. specs. once he send that too. This sounds very promising. PS - I have specifically asked him how this chip deals with pre-detonation. Sounds promising?

You will find that the LH 2.2 used in 740T to 1989 cannot be chipped (at least reasonably easily and inexpensively). You will find that the chip BSR sells is for LH 2.4 used in the US on 740/940T from 1990-1995. You will also find that you need a separate ignition chip for the EZK and that not all EZK boxes are easily or inexpensively chipped (not sure what the dates or model numbers are). I went through this with Stefan at BSR several years ago.

There is a fellow named Byron Bedard who has chipped a late 80s 740T with the help of BSR. I have yet to hear the details, but I believe it was somehow done to the LH 2.2. Not sure whether he did the ignition.
