Solved! Intermittent no start.[200/1988] posted by Jim on

Remember my intermittent no start? Started hot, and cold, in between cranked excessively, usually started, gas smell, plugs wet. After too much work, disassembling FI unit for cleaning, checking all sensors, etc., I took the car to a local Volvo expert (had been using a friend's general garage). I think I mentioned that I live in La Paz, Bolivia where anywhere in town is 11,000 feet or more. Per the expert (Fernando, a Chilean), the Bosch FI system canNOT adjust to our altitude. The fix? He wired in a switch to cut off power to the fuel pump. I crank it and if it doesn't want to start, I flip the switch to cut off fuel flow. It fires immediately, after which I flip the switch to restore fuel flow and drive away, happy as a lark. The underdash switch also works for antitheft, since switching it off stops the engine from starting or running. Cost? Less than $20 labor and parts.
