1983 245Ti, Need help guys I am stared at, smalling children are runing away from the big bad noisey car. With the AC on everything is cold and happy in volvoland. When the AC compressor clutch disengages it has a metal on metal sound, I should write a song "Where has my bearing gone?" It has a York compressor, any one changed a clutch on one of these? Is it a DIY job or more involved. The P/S pump belt runs off this pulley also or I would cut the belt to the A/C untill I could get time to fix. Any help is appreciated before the EPA noise abatement society catches up with me.

Changing the clutch is relatively easy; remove the center bolt and thread a much larger bolt(5/8"?,3/4"? I forget) into the threads in the clutch, tighten and pop, it's off.

/// You may have to hold the front of the clutch to get the nut to break loose. There have been posts that recommend energizing the clutch to hold it but if it is worn down to metal on metal that probably won't help.
There is an adjustable tool just for that purpose but I fashioned one, with just two pins rather than three, from a piece of angle iron. Drill holes and put the correct size bolts with jam nuts to hold them in place.. You will never need anything but that one size tool. The expensive one is adjustable for all A/C clutches.
I recommend removing the radiator and shroud for room.
